Fred Thompson Opposed Bullet Proof Vests for Cops

Since it looks like Fred is getting ready to jump into the race next week I thought I'd take a look at the Congressional Record during his tenure.

Now you would think that Arthur Branch would be very concerned about our police officers being protected.  Well according to the Congressional Record for May 15, 1998 Sen. Thompson rose to speak that he felt that federal funds should not be made available to municipalities for the purpose of purchasing body armor for police officers.  There was an ongoing debate on the BULLETPROOF VEST PARTNERSHIP GRANT ACT OF 1998.

He stated the following:

Some localities are enlightened and have provided money for body armor.

WTF?!

It makes you wonder if he believes that those of us who don't live in New Orleans are enlightened as well, and that anyone who lives/lived there is a dolt.

The Legislation ultimately passed and became law on June 16, 1998, even with Sen. Thompson's opposition.
